Notes
Gland Follower: A gland follower, often simply called a gland in many contexts, is an important mechanical component used in sealing applications, particularly with rotating or reciprocating shafts, valves, and pumps. Its primary function is to compress packing material (like braided rope packing or O-rings) against a shaft or stem to create a leak-tight seal.
Purpose:
Sealing: The main purpose is to prevent the leakage of fluids (liquids or gases) along a moving or stationary shaft/stem where it passes through a housing or pressure boundary.
Containment: It helps contain the fluid within the system, ensuring efficient operation and preventing waste or environmental contamination.
Pressure Management: By compressing the packing, it helps the seal withstand internal system pressure.
Components and How it Works: Imagine a shaft passing through a hole in a pump casing. Around this shaft, within a space called a "stuffing box," packing material is placed. Packing material is placed around this shaft, within a space called a "stuffing box". The gland follower then comes into play:
Stuffing Box: This is the cylindrical or annular chamber in the equipment housing where the packing material is situated.
Packing Material: This is the actual sealing element. It can be:
Braided Packing: Often made of materials like graphite, PTFE, aramid, or various synthetic fibers, braided into a rope-like form. Rings of this packing are cut and inserted into the stuffing box.
O-rings or other resilient seals: While less common for "gland followers" in the traditional sense, some designs might use them.
Gland Follower (the component itself): This is typically a cylindrical or annular metal ring or collar. It has a bore that fits over the shaft and an outer diameter that fits into the stuffing box.
Studs and Nuts (or Bolts): Two or more threaded studs typically extend from the equipment housing around the stuffing box. The gland follower has holes through which these studs pass. Nuts are then tightened onto these studs.
How it works:
As the nuts on the studs are tightened, they pull the gland follower deeper into the stuffing box. This action directly compresses the packing material. The compression forces the packing to expand radially (outward against the stuffing box wall and inward against the shaft/stem), creating a tight seal and preventing leakage.
