The Irish word "báisteach" (rain in English) has some interesting similarities with Urdu and Hindi, etc. The Urdu word for rain is بارش "baarish"; Hindi is similar: बारिश "baarish". Rain is Baran باران in Persian. In Sanskrit "varsha" वर्षा is “rain”.
"The Irish "báisteach" is found as early as the 12th century, and seems to be a cross between the words for baptism (baiste) and drowning (bá), almost certainly an ironic description of heavy rain", according to an article in the Irish Times Newspaper [1].
These words for rain sound fairly similar and the spelling is fairly similar. The letters "b" and "v" are very close and are often interchanged in many languages. "Rain" is also a natural phenomenon, is therefore a very old concept, and has been described for a very long time in different languages, thus connections a more likely than with more recent words and concepts. I wonder is there a connection through the Indo-European link?
