Carbon monoxide CO2 is a colourless gas which burns with a blue, non-luminous flame. It is not soluble in water, has no smell and is very poisonous, producing a form of asphyxiation. Exhaust fumes from petrol engines contain a large proportion of carbon monoxide and it is the presence of this that makes them poisonous. Carbon monoxide readily takes up oxygen to form carbon dioxide.
