Notes
Felgenhorn: Das Felgenhorn am Rad eines Autos ist der äußerste, hochstehende Rand der Felge. Es ist der Teil der Felge,
der direkt mit dem Reifenwulst in Kontakt kommt und diesen in Position hält.
Rim flange: On a car wheel, the rim flange is the external ridge or edge of the rim that helps to secure the tyre bead and keep the tyre airtight and firmly in place. The tyre's inner edge (the bead) sits against it and presses into it.
Tyre Retention: The primary purpose of the rim flange is to prevent the tyre from slipping off the wheel, especially during cornering, braking, or when encountering bumps and potholes. It provides the necessary support for the tyre bead to create a secure seal.
Airtight Seal: The flange helps to create an airtight seal with the tyre bead and the bead seat (the part of the rim where the tyre sits). This ensures the tyre maintains proper air pressure.
Standardization: Rim flanges are standardized by organizations like ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) to ensure compatibility between tyres and wheels. Common design variations for passenger cars are denoted by letters like "J" (most common) and "B."
Vulnerability to Damage: The rim flange is often the first part of the wheel to suffer damage, particularly from impacts with curbs or other obstacles.
Rim Well: The "rim well" (also known as the drop center) is the area between the rim flanges; this is a recessed area that allows for easier mounting and dismounting of the tyre.
Rim Width Measurement: The width of the rim is measured as the distance between the rim flanges, as this corresponds to the inner diameter of the suitable tyres.
